The Two Lighthouses Walk

About Us

North Somerset is blessed with three of the most distinctive and quirky lighthouses in the country and you can take in two of them in one easy 3.5 mile out-and-back walk from Portishead.

The walk starts at the bizarre looking Battery Point Lighthouse before heading south along the coast path to the Black Nore Lighthouse, which has been described as looking like a starship that has dropped from outer space.

You can park for free and with a sea view at the Portishead Lake Grounds Lake Grounds at The Esplanade, Portishead, BS20 7HD

1) After parking head north past the Portishead heated open air lido and onto the headland where you will see the black lighthouse which sits on a short platform over the rocks.

2) From there, retrace your steps back past the open air swimming pool to Woodhill Bay and along the esplanade. At the end of the esplanade, continue uphill past some houses, until you see an un-made road to your right leading to the Kilkenny car park.

3) Follow the track into the car park and walk along the field at the foot of the hill following the shoreline of the Bristol Channel.

4)  This field will soon lead to the coast path in its bottom corner.

5). The walk is quite easy from here, just follow the path until you reach the distinctive Black Nore Lighthouse. You will pass some pebbled beaches along the way, the Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club and also a cottage which occupies a privileged position right on the rocks.

6) There is a pebbled beach at the Black Nore Lighthouse which makes a good sandwich stop before turning round and retracing your steps to Portishead.

Walkers with plenty of fuel left in the tank at this point may want to extend their walk along the coast path to Clevedon, with its historic Victorian Pier. This is an extension of around five miles (one way) and may include a diversion away from the coast path because of 2024 cliff falls at Ladye Bay.

Back in Portishead at the Lake Grounds there are two cafes for refreshments.

The Lake Grounds café is open daily 10am-4pm, except in very bad weather. Toilets available next door (20p charge) Café Lido at Portishead Open Air Pool is run by volunteers.

For those who prefer something a little stronger, dog-friendly Windmill Pub, at the top of the hill as you come off the coast path and back onto the green at Portishead offers an excellent alternative with a stunning view.
