Big band commemorates VE day 70th anniversary with 1940s dance night

Big band Boulevard Swing are commemorating the 70th anniversary of VE day with a 1940s themed dance night on 2nd May.

Taking place at Kewstoke Village Hall, the 18 performers that make up Boulevard Swing (some of whom are ex-forces members) will be playing a number of classics from the 1940s era, made famous by musicians such as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and the Andrews sisters.

Guests are encouraged to dress in 1940s-inspired costumes to help the dance night go with a swing.

Tickets for the event are £10, with doors opening at 7.30pm. A bar is available. Please visit www.boulevardswing.com for more information. Alternatively you can enquiries@boulevardswing.com or call 0844 874 7406.

VE day

Victory in Europe (VE) Day took place on Tuesday 8 May 1945 and marked the official end of the Second World War in Europe.

According to the British Legion, around 382,700 members of the armed forces and 671,100 civilians died during the 6-year conflict.

Despite rationing, street parties were held up and down the country and hundreds of thousands of people descended on London to see George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Winston Churchill on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, which was lit up by floodlights for the first time since 1939.

It also meant people were allowed to read and hear about the weather forecast again, which had remained top secret during the war!
